Mobile Apps Lead the Way in Record Cricket Viewership

Last week saw the end of the 15 day ICC Champions Trophy, one of the most prestigious prizes in Cricket and ESPN’s ESPNcricinfo broke multiple viewership records while broadcasting the tournament that featured the top teams from eight nations

The overall online and mobile numbers are great to start with, the tournament generating an average of 41 million page views a day, an increase of 245% compared to the 2009 tournament, while the last day of the event that featured the matchup between India and England drew 87.5 million page views across all devices.

Online access at ESPNcricinfo.com averaged 2.6 million daily visitors, a 98% increase. The visitors’ averaged a 65% increase in page views with 17.5 million average and that broke down to an average of 61.1 million minutes a day, up 65%.

The mobile section is where the huge growth came, no doubt in a good part driven by the massive growth of smartphone and tablet ownership since the last tournament and enabled ESPNcricinfo to have an app for the event.

The app had an average of 11.3 million page views and 6.4 million minutes, while the mobile Web’s average of 898,000 daily visitors represented a 631% increase. Those daily visitors then logged an average of 12.2 million page views, up 854%.

Not surprising was that India, the world’s second most populous nation led the way in terms of traffic generated with an average of 1.1 million daily visitors, up 220% and they generated 7.2 million page views, up 198% .Mobile traffic in the US was up 970%, up 1,390% in the U.K. and 1,472% in Australia.

Streaming Stanley Cup Playoff App a Big Hit for NBC Sports

For the first time the ability to watch all of the Stanley Cup playoff games live from a variety of mobile devices as well as computers has been warmly greeted by fans according to the early numbers released by NBC. Over 40 million minutes have been streamed through the first three rounds.

While in the past there has been some streaming, with 12 games shown last year, viewership is up 289% compared to last year and 1,198% from 2011, when the league showed only 8 games while this year so far there has been 76 streamed games, not counting the finals.

The games are available on NBC Sports Live Extra, a live streaming product from the NBC Sports Group that supports not only desktop and notebook computers but also mobile devices and tablets for the first time.

The first two years that the network streamed games it was only available on computers and still the numbers showed strong growth, going from 3,126,562 in 2011 to 10,427,216 in 2012 and leaping to 26,296,641 so far this year.

However this year is the first where users can also load the games on mobile devices, and they have accounted for more minutes than the first two PC years combined at 14,293,950. The games air on NBC, NBC Sports Network, and CNBC

So far the two most popular games have been the Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final double overtime win by the Boston Bruins over the Pittsburgh Penguins with 2.59 million minutes and the Game 5 of the Western Conference Final where the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3, in double overtime to clinch their spot in the finals. 2.58 million minutes were streamed for that event.

Apple Shows iOS7, OSX and iTunes Radio at WWDC

Apple’s annual World Wide Developer Conference opened today at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and the company’s CEO Tim Cook took center stage to talk about what the company’s near term plans are and to drop hints about what it might do in the long run.

There had already been a host of hints about what the company would discuss, focused primarily on the software side with a new iOS and a new OS for computers online. The questions people had were about a possible music service and if there was going to be any solid news about hardware such as next generation iPads and iPhones.

The issue that Apple increasingly faces at this event, and for that matter at any event at which it makes an announcement is that there is a sense of over anticipation among the company’s fans and it is increasingly hard to have blockbuster after blockbuster announcements

Apple opened the show with its usual retail update and one set of numbers really stands out of you are an app developer looking at this platform. Apple has 575 million online accounts and it has paid app developers $10 billion over the last five years, reportedly that is 3X more than all of the other platforms combined. The company’s game center has 240 million users. 600 million iOS devices sold.

Mac sales are up 100% in the last year, compared to only 18% for PCs. The company introduced its latest upgrade to its computer operating system, OSX Mavericks. It has, as expected a host of new features including CPU optimization, compressed memory that enables apps to start much faster, iBooks, Maps, and the ability to merge multiple windows.

The operating system is available now for developers and for the general public this fall. There is also a new line of MacBook Airs with a huge increase in batter life due to using the Haswell processor, all available now while a sneak peak at forthcoming Mac Pro desktops was also provided.

The company showed iWorks for iCloud that enables users to create and format documents in your browser, and it supports drag and drop. It is in beta now and should be available by the end of the year.

The latest mobile operating system, iOS 7 was also introduced at the show. It starts out with a basic new look with redesigned icons and what is referred to as a flatter look. That is just on top, it has been redesigned to have distinct layers of functionality that help with order and establish a hierarchy.

An interesting twist is that in the future you will be able to get iOS in your future car as at least 12 automakers have agreed to integrated the OS by the end of next year. It can get maps, make calls and play music, just as you would expect.

A few of the new features include multitasking supported by all apps, folders now support multiple pages so they can store more apps. New access to Control Center, you just simply swipe up from the bottom of the device as well as faster access to Wi-Fi. It has the ability to judge apps that you use more, or use at specific times of day to enable them faster.

New organization and added filters for photos and it can now share video with iCloud. New updated version of Siri of course including a male voice, information from Twitter, Bing and Wikipedia has been integrated.

iTunes radio was introduced and is built into the music app, with features such as one tap purchase of songs and the ability to share music with friends and create your own stations. Another new iTunes feature is that it will no longer notify you when apps need updating, it will just do it automatically.

Other software news was that the new iOS 7 will be supported by iPhones 4 and later and iPad 2 and later. There are 1,500 new APIs for developers and the final release of the operating system will be this fall.

Athlete vs. Fan Gaming Challenge App OverDog seeks Kickstarter Funding

OverDog, a potential new entrant into the field of apps that allow professional athletes to interact with fans is now in the fund raising process at crowd funding site Kickstarter with a goal of raising $100,000 within the next month.

The app claims that it will provide fans with the ability to have access to athletes, but not in the way that a social media such as Twitter allows. Rather it enables fans and athletes to issue video game challenges and then play each other.

The app will be free and available for both Android and iOS devices, but only subscribers will have the privilege to challenge and play athletes. In the future the app is expected to have Fan vs Fan capabilities as well as possibly live streaming matches.

OverDog has a group of current and ex-athletes included in the effort including Matt Forte, Calvin Johnson, David Price and Rex Grossman. Games that a fan can challenge an athlete to include Call of Duty, Madden, Halo and FIFA, with the site saying that additional games will be available for play.

So far the program has garnered approximately $31,000 in funding and offers a variety of incentives to invest in the program which is expected to be available in beta sometime in April of this year. For $15 you could receive a 3 month beta subscription starting with its release and for $20 you get a subscription for the rest of the year. The app is not expected to be available to the general public until August.

Step up into the $95 range and you get 5 subscriptions, at $150 you will receive a permanent subscription and then there are several offerings at the $1,000 level including a choice of an MLS or NFL package that includes a game with a player from your favorite team.

While it is increasingly common for players to interact with fans over social media such as Twitter, and there are apps to follow favorite athletes such as this one from NASCAR, Sprint and Turner Sports, and there have been hangouts with fans such as this one prior to last year’s Summer Olympics.

This seems to be a fresh approach and should have great appeal to fans; the issue is going to be one of availability and interest. If you have to wait weeks or longer to play a specific athlete the enjoyment will wan rapidly. Also it needs to maintain the athletes interest or they may stop logging in to play. Well that is in the future and if anybody starts playing let us know how it goes.

Cool New Web App for Getting PGA Scores: Live Interactive Course Map

PGA scoring map appThere’s a cool new way to get live scores from PGA Tournament events, which uses live data superimposed on a Google map to give you a graphic way to see who is playing on which hole, and what their current score is.

Built by a company called Earthvisionz from my old stomping grounds of Boulder, Colo., the app is already live on the web — go take a look at livemaps.pgatour.com to see how it works, since you will be able to figure it out faster than I can tell you about it. Basically, it’s a Google map of the course with live data that shows who is playing the hole, how far they’ve hit their shots, how far to the hole, etc. From what we can tell, it’s the PGA’s Shot Link info but put into a form that’s cooler to use than looking up and down a graphical list.

The only quibble I have right now is that you have to click on the bubble twice to get the full shot info like distance and score. (See screenshot below) But according to the press release from Earthvisionz the app is designed to do a lot more, including being able to see where you are on a course, and where important “amenities” like bathrooms and beer tents are located. (This would have been a great app to have at last year’s U.S. Open!) Since this looks like a web app it should be available to any device… let us know if you can’t see it on a particular device. Looks great from our desktop connection, I wonder how well it works on cellular. Anyone at the tourney this week, please let us know!

As Expected Apple Unveils iPhone 5 in a More Mature Smartphone Market

Almost a year after it delivered the iPhone 4S, Apple is back on stage with its next generation iPhone, the iPhone 5 and the question that many have is not how good will it be but rather how fast will it sell.

That aside there are a lot of interesting features in the new phone and now we can finally separate the facts from the rumors, which have been bouncing around the Internet almost since they finished the iPhone 4S press conference.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, vowed that the new phone would once again change phones forever, something that Time Magazine said about the first iPhone. From what he showed on stage it does appear that the company has once again raised the bar for rivals to match.

The new iPhone 5 is an all glass and aluminum device that features a 4-inch display and yet is 18% thinner than an iPhone 4S and 20% lighter and is powered by a new Apple A6 processor that is 2x faster than the previous chip and runs graphics at twice the rate as the older processor.

The display features has integrated touch technology with sensors built into the screen for faster response and the 4-inch screen has the same 326 ppi as the old one with an 1136 x 640 4-inch retina display. It now sports five rows of icons on-screen.

A number of features show that Apple has developed the knack of tightly integrating features in its components. It has a single chip radio that supports HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE as well as new Wi-Fi with 2.4GHz, and 5GHz 802.11n.

As has long been rumored it has a new connector, called Lightning, that is an all digital, 8-signal design, adaptive interface that has improved durability and just as good for people that attach them in the dark, it is reversible. The company is developing an adapter for the older 30 pin accessories.

The camera, called iSight, was also a major rebuild. With an 8 mp sensor the camera has a range of new features including dynamic low light settings, precision lens adjustments, 40% faster photo taking, a panorama feature and the ability to use 720p HD video in FaceTime.

Siri, its voice command technology has been updated and made faster and now has the ability to post to Facebook directly from Siri. With all of the new features Apple has also extended the battery life in many usage models.

The iPhone 5 will be available in a black or white model with the same price for the iPhone 4S. Prices are $199 for a 16GB model, $299 for a 32GB model and $399 for a 64GB model while on a 2-year contract. Sept. 14 can preorder and they will start shipping on Sept. 21 in 9 countries including the U.S., with expanded availability a week later. In the U.S. the phone will be availabe from AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. The new lineup is iPhone 4, 4S, 5 with Apple eliminating the 3GS. The company also upgraded iTunes and the iPod and iOS 6 is expected to be available within a week.

Apple started the show by highlighting some of the successes its other products are currently enjoying. The recently introduced MacBook Air is tops in U.S. market the last three months, according to CEO Tim Cook, with a 27% share in July.

There were 17 million iPads sold in last quarter, which was more than any other PC manufacturer sold in its entire lineup, Cook said, adding that the company has now sold 84 million in just two and a half years and owns a 68% worldwide market share. There are now 700,000 apps in the app store with 250,000 designed for iPad. 90% of all apps downloaded at least once a month average customer has over 100 apps.

Google, which has recently released its own tablet, seems to be one of the losers with the new iPhone 5 as Apple has replaced Google Maps with its own technology, one that will be open to third party developers who can add transit and other information to the program, according to Apple Insider.

Apple will be using vector graphics in an attempt to provide a superior viewing experience and will be including a 3D Flyover feature that will be its alternative to Google’s Streetview.

In the past iPhone rollouts each successive generation has greatly outsold the previous one, even with the relatively minor updates that were included in the iPhone 4S. However not everyone is predicting a massive outpouring of the Apple faithful to buy the phones.

Steve Baker at The NPD Group said earlier this week in a blog post that the market the latest phone is being introduced into is greatly different that the market of just one year ago. He points out that the market is maturing and so demand, no matter how great the product is, could be lessened by the slowing overall growth of the market. According to NPD in the second quarter of 2012 the smartphone space in the IS grew 9% with the bulk of the sales being in pre-paid devices.

One group watching the potential sales of the new iPhone will be app developers. Over the past year almost every major app that we have looked at came out first for the iPhone, and strong initial sales will ensure that will continue.

The ability to have the app developers’ focus first on Apple’s iOS and the iPhone is a big advantage in keeping sports fans interesting. MLB’s apps come out first on the iPhone and often second on the iPad tablet. Apple is facing increasingly stiff competition in the smartphone business from the Android platform, with Microsoft starting to try and heat things up with its operating system via partner Nokia and others.

According to Google, there are currently 1.3 million Android devices added every day, up from 700,00 daily at the end of last year. Android sales surpassed Apple’s iOS in 2010 and could with products like Samsung’s Galaxy S III selling 20 million in two weeks the pressure is not likely to abate any time soon.

However from the initial look at the iPhone 5 Apple has delivered a product that will keep the pressure on its rivals to innovate and continue advancing their own platforms and do so in a manner that is unique to them, and not imitative of Apple.
