StatSmack Provides Legitimate Breakthrough in Sports Social Media

StatSheet has launched something simple, and simply ingenious, to the sports social media public.

Called StatSmack, and available online, through App Store and Android Market, the service allows sports fans to select their favorite team and an opponent from drop-down boxes, and access statistics that will make their tweets more relevant, edgier, and cutting.

Why StatSmack is a Big Deal

This is a legitimate breakthrough in sports social media.

Today, whether following a twitter stream or a game space for social media interaction, you’ll notice that the majority of people are not that creative when it comes to what they share.

During a New England Patriots versus New York Giants game, it would not be surprising to see 70 percent or more of all tweets saying nothing more than “Go Patriots” or “Go Giants,”  for example.

StatSmack pulls information from wide and various sources to give people edgy perspective, and ideas about what they might tweet about. It uses artificial intelligence to scour the Internet for statistics to construct the tweets, which can range from traditional sports statistics, to average heights and weights of players to city crime statistics.

StatSmack has implications for sports social media in many ways.

Today, such companies as GiveMojo are creating game spaces out of Twitter streams. In those scenarios, tweet volume and the quality of tweets are counted and refereed, with teams competing during games to see which team outscores the other. StatSmack is an important new tool for those applications because it provides fodder for fans who otherwise might be stymied to come up with original things to say.

In addition, StatSmack breaks new ground by landing what many other companies are still trying to reel in — sponsorship.

According to StatSheet founder and CEO Robbie Allen, a deal with a large financial services company has been signed to provide promoted smacks as part of the service. It marks one of the first times a sports social innovation has been quick to monetize, and could signal that other companies will have an easier time landing financial support in 2012.

“It worked out that we found the right sponsor at the right time,” Allen said, while declining to name the company because the deal has not been formally announced. “The big advantage for us that’s very difficult for other media companies to match is that we can embed the sponsor in the content.”

Media Company on the Rise

StatSheet’s release of StatSmack marks the continued rise of a media company to be reckoned with in years to come.

‘Hard Foul’ Sports Video Crests 6 Million Views

If you are a high-school sports official, and you don’t think your calls can’t earn a national spotlight, think again.

A YouTube video of an obscure high-school basketball game in Washington State is getting national attention because it shows a series of flagrant fouls. It was posted by a local fan, and shows two Connell High School basketball players hacking, clothes lining, and pushing Vanderbilt rivals. Since it was posted, the video has accumulated over 6 million views.

The video was taken by a local fan, who initially posted it to demonstrate the need for better officiating, according to a Seattle Times report.

The video underscores that any sporting event — not just nationally broadcast games — can gain the national spotlight, and could eventually lead to better standards in prep sports officiating.

AT&T 1st Telco to Use Foursquare Badge Contest

Giving away a trip for two to the 2013 BCS National Championship game, AT&T will offer fans a chance to unlock foursquare badges at check-in locations for all of the BCS title games, as well as select sports bars. Running between Jan. 2 and Jan. 9, the name of the promotion is “AT&T Football Fanatic. ”

Guidelines for the game appear on a Facebook page.

Badges are the essence of foursquare, the booming social media platform, because it has turned social media into a game. Earning badges allow people to stand out from others.

With its “AT&T Football Fanatic” contest, AT&T is one of the most aggressive large brands to leverage foursquare thus far.AT&T VP  Wireless Data, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets Ted Woodbury called foursquare “a unique social media platform.” At foursquare, the game was sold and coordinated by a team led by VP of Mobile and International Holger Luedorf.

 

BCS Games where AT&T will enable check-in are the Jan. 2 Rose Bowl, Jan. 2 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 3 Allstate Sugar Bowl, Jan. 4 Discover Orange Bowl and Jan. 9 Allstate BCS National Championship.

Another example of AT&T’s commitment to foursquare is a popular AT&T Blackberry Torch 4G commercial that’s currently in heavy rotation during network sports coverage, a Dilbert-type declares himself “Mayor Dennis of the Water Cooler.”

 

 

ManU wins laurels in Brit Sports Digital Agency’s New Soccer Social Media Stats

In what could prove a template for U.S. sports teams interested in tracking the efficacy of their outreach, the innovative and edgy digital sports agency Freestyle Interactive has launched a Social Media analytics service for English Premier League soccer.

On a monthly basis,  Freestyle will publish the total tweets, Twitter followers and Facebook Likes Premier teams rack up. The company has published the December numbers, which show ManU sucking wind on Twitter as it is tied for last at No. 19 among 20 teams. Meanwhile, Aresenal has landed over 1 million Twitter followers in the same time frame.

On Facebook, ManU is top dog with over 20 million likes. That’s interesting data because it may determine whether a totally Facebook-centric strategy or a Twitter-centric strategy delivers the greatest bang for your buck.

Sports social media sponsorship dollars should add significant new revenue streams for sports teams within three years, Mobile Sports Report’s senior editor Frookie predicts.

Displaying awesome chops in the social media arena, Freestyle is also identifying its pick as the best of the month in sports social media innovation for allowing fans to display Tweets on its scoreboard during games.

Kudos to Freestyle for being as cagey as Chelsea’s goaltender Peter Cech is at keeping balls out of his cage.

Friday Grab Bag: New Windy City Sports Blog This Spring

New Chicago focused Web site launches with solid cast
While the review might be a bit over the top, Robert Feder in his column points out a new entrant to the world of sports blogging, and one focused on Chicago that will go by the name of ChicagoSide that is slated to officially launch on baseball opening day in 2012.

Author and columnist Jonathan Eig is helping lead the charge. If you are unfamiliar with his name you may have seen some of his books in the sports sections- such as Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig and Opening Day: The Story of Jackie Robinson’s First Season.

The web site will have three dozen writers, something that in this day and age is almost mind blowing. Among the initial lineup will be Lou Carlozo, George Castle, James Finn Garner, Jim Coffman, Lauren Etter, Elliott Harris, Noah Isackson, Billy Lombardo, Amy Merrick, Joel Reese, and Alan Solomon,. Theo Epstein might find himself missing the Boston press corps.

Will Tim Tebow slay ESPN’s QB rating system?
Rating systems are always a lot of fun, often hard to figure out, great source of bar arguments and rarely do they provide any insight if rating an individual in a team sport. ESPN happily entered the market this year with its QBR.

The Washington Post’s Achenblog takes a good poke at the system noting that winning is not one of the metrics and that Tebow fares poorly in the QBR. He says that it does not measure heart, leadership and desire.

While those are often the lead in anti-stat diatribes this one is not really that. He also notes that rating systems do not take into consideration the changes in rules in the NFL that allows QBs and receivers to run free to a degree that players a generation earlier would have loved. Also would you trust any rating system that puts Philip Rivers as a better QB that Joe Montana?

Control your Xbox from your Windows Phone
Microsoft has released its Xbox Companion App for its Windows Phone 7.5 operating system. With the app a user can control select services on their Xbox as well as consume any content that they might have stored on the device. In addition Microsoft has added search capabilities to examine the entire Xmox catalog and find games, apps, movies and movies.

The phone enables users to learn additional details about the objects of a search as well as select and launch a search result movie, video game TV show or app on the console as well as play, rewind and pause music and video. The App is free from Microsoft.

Will the Kindle Fire be 50% of Android Tablet Market in 2012?
That is the thought of Evercore Partners’ Robert Cihra who believes that the tablet from Amazon will have a major impact in the Android space, carving out a huge niche for itself and creating barriers for rivals to enter and profit from the space.

The Kindle Fire, which many have estimated Amazon sells for cost, and possibly just a hair under, in the old razor/razor blade business model, could “Vaporize” the for profit Android tablet OEM business according to Cihra.

He notes that Apple will remain the dominate player in this space with its iPad and that it will continue to dominate the most profitable segment of the market. The Kindle talking 50% of the Android market would represent a drop in the bucket of the overall market which Apple is expected to have a market share of as much as 70% in 2012 depending on the source.


Twitter claims iOS integration boosts signups by 25%

The redesign of Twitter appears to have struck a chord with one segment of the market, the Apple iOS users. The redesign, for those of you who have not noticed, includes a consistent menu across desktop and mobile platforms, the ability to track what has happened with an individual post and a Discovery section that recommends new areas based on previous history, among other changes.

So where does the iOS come in? Well it actually started helping the micro blogging site earlier when it integrated the service into its mobile OS. Users can tweet photos directly from the camera, for instance. Since the integration Twitter has seen a notable uptick in status updates, according to MACNN.

Frookie Speaks Out: DeSean Jackson Sulk Underscores Game-Day Picture Power

A picture is worth a thousand words, and increasingly during the 2011 National Football League season it is a sideline image that tells the most compelling game-day story.

Thursday night, it was troubled Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson ignoring quarterback Vince Young during an embarrassing, nationally televised 34-14 loss to the mediocre Seattle Seahawks:

This isn’t the first time that a sideline image or video clip, perfect for smartphone distribution, has dominated post-game conversation in the 2011 NFL football season. An image of Washington Redskin’s QB Rex Grossman after teammate John Beck threw a touchdown pass had many of the team’s fans questioning whether Grossman isn’t just in it for himself:

Is this a meaningless expression, or the telltale sign of a selfish football player?

Frookie Speaks Out: Media outlets distinguish themselves in today’s sports media arena when they come up with a great photo, video clip, player profile or analysis. In fact, I’m less likely than ever to read a run-of-the-mill game recap on any website other than StatSheet, because StatSheet’s automated approach gives me a cleaner, more consistent read, and all the statistics I need to optimize my sports betting and Fantasy experiences. But, give me a good image or video clip that I can share via a smartphone, and I am all over it.  And share opinion or insight that allows me to contribute to my sports discussions with friends, and I am all over that, too. Just don’t waste my time producing anything less.

Frookie Speaks Out: After taking a flyer on Michael Vick and having it work out, the Philadelphia Eagles came to believe they could be successful with any talented player no matter what transgressions they had, or what the Wonderlic Test revealed about their character (or lack thereof).  Eagles fans are paying a steep price for that hubris.  Beginning with coach Andy Reid and general manager Howie Roseman, the Eagles should clean house. Then, they should build a winning team of character, befitting the city and state they represent. In that way, Philadelphians and Pennsylvanians can again have at least one  nationally recognized football team they can be proud of.  That would be the picture-perfect solution.
