As Expected Apple Unveils iPhone 5 in a More Mature Smartphone Market

Almost a year after it delivered the iPhone 4S, Apple is back on stage with its next generation iPhone, the iPhone 5 and the question that many have is not how good will it be but rather how fast will it sell.

That aside there are a lot of interesting features in the new phone and now we can finally separate the facts from the rumors, which have been bouncing around the Internet almost since they finished the iPhone 4S press conference.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, vowed that the new phone would once again change phones forever, something that Time Magazine said about the first iPhone. From what he showed on stage it does appear that the company has once again raised the bar for rivals to match.

The new iPhone 5 is an all glass and aluminum device that features a 4-inch display and yet is 18% thinner than an iPhone 4S and 20% lighter and is powered by a new Apple A6 processor that is 2x faster than the previous chip and runs graphics at twice the rate as the older processor.

The display features has integrated touch technology with sensors built into the screen for faster response and the 4-inch screen has the same 326 ppi as the old one with an 1136 x 640 4-inch retina display. It now sports five rows of icons on-screen.

A number of features show that Apple has developed the knack of tightly integrating features in its components. It has a single chip radio that supports HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE as well as new Wi-Fi with 2.4GHz, and 5GHz 802.11n.

As has long been rumored it has a new connector, called Lightning, that is an all digital, 8-signal design, adaptive interface that has improved durability and just as good for people that attach them in the dark, it is reversible. The company is developing an adapter for the older 30 pin accessories.

The camera, called iSight, was also a major rebuild. With an 8 mp sensor the camera has a range of new features including dynamic low light settings, precision lens adjustments, 40% faster photo taking, a panorama feature and the ability to use 720p HD video in FaceTime.

Siri, its voice command technology has been updated and made faster and now has the ability to post to Facebook directly from Siri. With all of the new features Apple has also extended the battery life in many usage models.

The iPhone 5 will be available in a black or white model with the same price for the iPhone 4S. Prices are $199 for a 16GB model, $299 for a 32GB model and $399 for a 64GB model while on a 2-year contract. Sept. 14 can preorder and they will start shipping on Sept. 21 in 9 countries including the U.S., with expanded availability a week later. In the U.S. the phone will be availabe from AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. The new lineup is iPhone 4, 4S, 5 with Apple eliminating the 3GS. The company also upgraded iTunes and the iPod and iOS 6 is expected to be available within a week.

Apple started the show by highlighting some of the successes its other products are currently enjoying. The recently introduced MacBook Air is tops in U.S. market the last three months, according to CEO Tim Cook, with a 27% share in July.

There were 17 million iPads sold in last quarter, which was more than any other PC manufacturer sold in its entire lineup, Cook said, adding that the company has now sold 84 million in just two and a half years and owns a 68% worldwide market share. There are now 700,000 apps in the app store with 250,000 designed for iPad. 90% of all apps downloaded at least once a month average customer has over 100 apps.

Google, which has recently released its own tablet, seems to be one of the losers with the new iPhone 5 as Apple has replaced Google Maps with its own technology, one that will be open to third party developers who can add transit and other information to the program, according to Apple Insider.

Apple will be using vector graphics in an attempt to provide a superior viewing experience and will be including a 3D Flyover feature that will be its alternative to Google’s Streetview.

In the past iPhone rollouts each successive generation has greatly outsold the previous one, even with the relatively minor updates that were included in the iPhone 4S. However not everyone is predicting a massive outpouring of the Apple faithful to buy the phones.

Steve Baker at The NPD Group said earlier this week in a blog post that the market the latest phone is being introduced into is greatly different that the market of just one year ago. He points out that the market is maturing and so demand, no matter how great the product is, could be lessened by the slowing overall growth of the market. According to NPD in the second quarter of 2012 the smartphone space in the IS grew 9% with the bulk of the sales being in pre-paid devices.

One group watching the potential sales of the new iPhone will be app developers. Over the past year almost every major app that we have looked at came out first for the iPhone, and strong initial sales will ensure that will continue.

The ability to have the app developers’ focus first on Apple’s iOS and the iPhone is a big advantage in keeping sports fans interesting. MLB’s apps come out first on the iPhone and often second on the iPad tablet. Apple is facing increasingly stiff competition in the smartphone business from the Android platform, with Microsoft starting to try and heat things up with its operating system via partner Nokia and others.

According to Google, there are currently 1.3 million Android devices added every day, up from 700,00 daily at the end of last year. Android sales surpassed Apple’s iOS in 2010 and could with products like Samsung’s Galaxy S III selling 20 million in two weeks the pressure is not likely to abate any time soon.

However from the initial look at the iPhone 5 Apple has delivered a product that will keep the pressure on its rivals to innovate and continue advancing their own platforms and do so in a manner that is unique to them, and not imitative of Apple.

Station Casinos Readying Mobile Betting App… for Nevada

Legalized sports gambling on mobile devices — one of those Holy Grail ideas for the mobile sports business — is going to get another lift soon when Station Casinos LLC brings its mobile betting app to full release later this fall.

According to a report by Chris Sieroty in the Las Vegas Journal-Review Tuesday, Station Casinos is in field trials for its mobile betting app, called Sports Connection Mobile, which will allow users to place all kinds of sports bets through Station Casinos from any location inside the state of Nevada. According to the LVR-J report, Station execs had previously announced plans to launch the mobile app by Oct. 31 of this year.

Station, which already has a system that lets gamblers place bets over an Internet connection or via phone in the Las Vegas area, is already letting people sign up for the mobile version on the Sports Connection website. The site also has news and updates for a wide range of sports, ostensibly to let bettors brush up on the sports they plan to wager on.

Online or mobile betting has always been an idea that gives the gaming industry excitement and pause, since it has both the potential to open up new streams of revenue but it also has the potential to decrease casino traffic by making it easier for folks to stay home and wager. But just like sports leagues who are putting more content online, gambling concerns are all exploring ways to tap into the unquestionable desire people have to wager on sports. As reported previously by Mobile Sports Report, Cantor Gaming is already taking bets on mobile devices and Leroy’s Sports Books have also had mobile app betting.

The LVR-J story has a good amount of details about Station Casino’s plans, including a relationship with Sprint Nextel that will give app users a 10 percent discount on their monthly wireless bill. Station, which operates 17 casinos in southern Nevada, including several in Las Vegas proper, has been sending direct-mail promotions announcing the forthcoming app to its gambling club members. Among the enticements is a $100 first-time credit for using the app. The LVR-J story says the app will initally be available for iPhones and Android phones and tablets, with versions for iPads and perhaps BlackBerry devices to follow.

One interesting part of any mobile betting app is the necessity to ensure that users are geographically within Nevada’s borders, where gambling is legal, while they use their mobile device to wager. While we haven’t yet delved into the technology that makes this happen or the regulatory safeguards keeping it in check, MSR feels confident that the near term future will include stories about how clever phone-programmer types found a way to defeat the geographical limitations. Bleacher Report adds Group Interaction Feature to Team Stream App

The popular Team Stream app from sports site Bleacher Report is getting more interactive, with the release of a new version that adds the ability for people to share their sports-team preferences with friends. Available initially only for the iPhone version of Team Stream, the “groups” feature will let fans share not only news but opinions with each other, bringing Team Stream into the field of smack-talk/interactive sports apps like PlayUp and others.

Bleacher Report, which was recently acquired by Turner Sports for approximately $180 million, claims to have 1 million users of its Team Stream app, which brings a constant “stream” of sports news, opinions, tweets and other content from the Web and organizes it by team for easy consumption. By adding an interactive feature Bleacher Report is seeking to keep fans embedded in Team Stream longer, instead of having to leave it to share opinions or news with friends who share the same team interests.

Fan interaction is hardly a new feature on the web, as sharing opinions and sports news seems to be one of the bigger things happening on Twitter these days. And standalone apps like PlayUp have already found big crowds of fans who want to set up or join sports-specific, game-specific or team-specific “rooms” or other online gathering places to interact. Team Stream, which has been focused on providing news and other content, is coming at the sharing equation from another direction, but one that seems to make sense as sharing apps like PlayUp have recently started adding news feeds to their feature set.

“We’ve found that most sports fans have small but distinct groups of friends they talk to about their favorite sports or teams, but still lack a simple way of sharing and reacting to news with them,” said David Finocchio, Chief Content and Product Officer at Bleacher Report, in a press release. “This version of Team Stream fills that void by providing a more efficient way for fans to quickly share the latest on their teams with the right group of friends and then react together.”

According to Bleacher Report, the new feature allows users to “easily add their friends to a group and share their favorite stories with them. Friends can open the group, read the shared stories and easily reply to the group all from their phones.” From an outside perspective the feature might also act as a good recruiting tool for B/R, allowing current Team Stream users to introduce the app to friends who might not have heard of it before. According to Bleacher Report the new 2.0 version of the Team Stream app will be developed for the Android and iPad versions of the app sometime in the future, but is only available now for the iPhone.

Everybody has friends that like to brag about how well they pick winners in sporting contests but a little digging often shows that they tend to do so without taking the odds into consideration, something that would have made the task considerably harder. And that is one feature that sets the app apart from others.

Users select the sport that you want to follow and make predictions about how a week’s slate of games is going to turn out, using the odds that have been established for that event. The apps scoring system takes the odds into account so that a victory by the favored team earns 100 points, and underdog team wins earn between 125 and 200 points, depending on the odds of winning.

The importance of the points is due to the apps challenge periods that feature prizes. The nice thing about the prizes is that they are real ones and not a cyber award that only is usable on the app. The company is offering gift cards from a variety of companies including Amazon, Sports Authority, Best Buy and others.

There s no cost to play and fans have two options; they can play on Facebook or via their iPhone using a free app available at Apple’s iTunes store. It has just emerged from beta testing in time for the start of Football.

There are a growing number of apps that do some of what SportsPicker Challenge does, but as far as I know none use the odds as part of the equation. There are plenty of apps that allow for bragging rights and even some that have prizes, but as far as I have seen the prizes are mostly cyber ones- points for contests and to get extra privileges. This is the one of first that has real world prizes, something I think that fans can appreciate as much as bragging rights.

There are single sports ones that provide prizes including the cool $1 million that the NFL is now offering but that is a fantasy league and so really a horse of a different color. PickMoto is also a one sports play, at least currently.

Samsung is Back with Galaxy Note II Phablet (Phone/Tablet)

Samsung is back with its latest tablet the Galaxy Note 2, or to be exact, a hybrid device that is both a phone and a tablet featuring a 5.5-inch screen and all of the functionality of a smartphone. It was one of many announcements the company made at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

The release comes less than a week after Samsung lost its court case vs Apple is US District Court, a lose that could result in fines as large as $3 billion and cause the company to have as many as eight smartphones banned in the US. The court has said that it will hear Apple’s request for a permanent injunction for select Samsung smartphones on Dec 6.

The latest Galaxy Note has a slightly larger screen, 5.5-inches as compared to 5.3-inches, compared to its predecessor. It has been reported that it is Sa

msung’s second most popular smartphone after its Galaxy S lineup. The first generation Note was released last October and sold $10 million units, according to the company.

The device, often called a phablet due to its hybrid nature will feature the larger display that has 1280 x 720 resolution, which is also slightly thinner that the previous version. In addition it will feature a quad core 1.6GHz processor and an 8 MP camera, includes the Android Jelly Bean operating system and it uses a stylus. It has 2GB RAM, and is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage versions.

There is competition in the phablet space with the LG Optimus VU and an expected one from HTC, the 6435LVW and considering the success that Samsung had with its first generation I would not be surprised to see more players join the field. I was very skeptical about them but I think that the customers that have purchased them simply envision them for uses in ways that I did not. Others also see the potential as market research firm AMI Research has predicted that annual sales for phablets will reach 208 million units globally by 2015

Apple Beats Samsung in Court: Will Microsoft Benefit as Well?

The mammoth Apple vs. Samsung case has been decided and Apple has emerged a strong victor as the jury ruled that Samsung copied Apple’s iPhone look and feel and awarded Apple $1.049 billion. An appeal is expected on Samsung’s part.

Apple is expected to ask the judge to triple the damages, to roughly $3 billion since the jury unanimously found that Samsung willfully violated Apple’s patents. Among the technologies copied were the ability to zoom text at the touch of a finger and to “bounce back” when scrolling off the page.

The judge has set a late September date for hearing Apple and Samsung’s points, including Samsung’s request to throw out the verdict and Apple’s request to ban importation of a range of Samsung devices.

The victory is widely viewed as having the potential to provide a damper on the smartphone and tablet markets which have seen explosive growth in the past few years by increasing licensing costs and slowing the adoption of new technologies.

The company that appears to be the most impacted by the decision is not Samsung but rather Google, who provides the Android ope

rating system that features some of the technologies that were at issue in the case. The question that many are wondering now is will developers seek indemnification from Google to shield them from potential Apple lawsuits?

The flip side of this is that a potential winner, aside from Apple, is very likely Microsoft, which will soon be pushing its new operating system for smartphones. Microsoft has a patent licensing agreement with Apple that also features an anticloning caveat that prevents Microsoft from delivering a knockoff of Apple’s look and feel.

There are plenty of comments now that this will have a tremendous impact on the market, and could hamper the growth of smartphones as developers have to find ways to either skirt Apple’s patents in their own development or work out licensing agreements with the company.

However the other side of this seems to me that it also opens the door to additional innovation, by forcing developers to look at the issues from a new point of view. This hopefully could lead to a new wave of products that offer features that might not be available today.

The case, originally filed in 2011, revolved around several issues. Apple claimed that Samsung violated a number of its patents and that Samsung closely copied its iPhones and iPads. The jury came down heavily in Apple’s camp, finding a wide range of devices, but not all, had violated a number of Apple patents.

Samsung had its own suit against Apple, claiming that Apple used its wireless technology improperly and was asking for $399 million. It lost its suit. This will obviously not be the end of this as the two have lawsuits against each other in South Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Australia and Samsung is set to appeal the verdict if the judge does not.
