Friday Grab Bag: Who Could Hate ESPN?

SEC Championship to be streamed live at CBS Sports
Once again the SEC has two of the top teams in the country locked in a battle, this time with #1 LSU vs #14 Georgia in the fight for the SEC title. The game will once again also be a top on-line offering from CBSSports.Com as it continues to raise its streaming sports profile.

The game will be broadcast on Saturday at 4 pm ET and pits the Eastern Division Champions Georgia against the Western Division winner LSU at the Georgia Dome. It will be streamed live over CBSSports.com/SECLive and CBS Sports Mobile.

CBS plans to start its game coverage an hour earlier and there will be a special tailgate program starting at 1 pm ET. There will also be the usual” 5th Quarter with Gary Danielson” after the game for an interactive post game program.

However interest in the game may not be what past championships have garnered. The Big Lead points out that with LSU a lock for the BCS title game win or lose sales for tickets has been less than stellar and that prices are dropping as fast as the point spread is increasing. I guess fans want to save their money for the expected trip to a bowl game.

Is your smartphone following your every move?
With the revelation that 140 million smartphones have a software component installed that records every keystroke that you make. The program, called Carrier IQ records and sends each keystroke as it is made and sends the information to the company.

Carrier IQ said that it is using the information as a diagnostic tool that will help it gain insight into issues such as why certain calls are dropped. Researcher Trevor Eckhart, who unveiled the issue, shows that it records browsing history, SMS logs and location data as well as keystrokes.

There are some claims that the technology violates Federal wiretapping laws. Well the good news is that congress is getting involved and I am sure that they will have the users’ best interest in mind when they inquire into this issue.

Is Craig James the most hated man at ESPN?
This seems to be the point of a recent Bleacher Report piece that states that he is strongly despised by a significant portion of the sports world. I must have missed this hatred, although I have to say I am not a fan, no one has ever come up to me and said they despise him like they do for say Joe Buck (I know he does not work for ESPN).

Anyway the article goes on to say America wants him fired and that “A vocal population of college football concludes James is a self-aggrandizing liar of the worst kind, who uses sophistry to get what he wants like we use paper towels to dry our hands.” Wow!

The bulk of the trouble seems to have arisen from his role in the Mike Leach ouster at Texas Tech and his inane votes in the BCS poll that alters the standings for both good and bad teams.

There appear to be several different pushes to get him fired and now at least some are trying to target advertisers to force ESPN’s hand. I think that if the revelations in Bruce Feldman’s book did not harm him at the WWL, and in fact drove out possible its best college football writer then nothing will.

New startup fund-Bye Bye Silicon Valley!
A new startup fund called the Revolution Growth Fund has been established by industry veterans Steve Case, Ted Leonsis and Donn Davis has been formed with a $450 million in initial funds. It is taking a different slant than many funds which mine Silicon Valley for potential startups.

Instead it will seek to find investment candidates on the East Coast. “We will generally focus on investments in the Eastern United States. We believe there are great entrepreneurs building great companies all over the country, so we will focus our attention outside of Silicon Valley,” according to a note posted on the Revolution Growth web page. The three founders are the three largest investors and there are an additional 24 limited partners.

The ideal company will be one that are consumer focused and are looking to disrupt large industries. The fund expects to be an investor in companies that have already had some venture funding and are now looking to take the proverbial hockey stick upturn. Initial investments are expected in the $20-$25 million range.

Tide turning for Samsung in patent wars?
Samsung won a patent victory of sorts in Australia where the Federal Court overturned a lower court ruling that said Samsung had copied Apple’s iPad and iPhone. This moves the company closer to selling its Galaxy tablets in that country.
However it is not entirely a get out of jail free card as it has been reported that Apple will in its turn appeal, this time to the High Court in an effort to get the overturning overturned. So at least in the near term the injunction against selling the products remains in force.

Make you (NFL Pro Bowl) Vote Count!
The voting closes following the December 19th following the Monday Night Football game between the Pittsburg Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers. You can go here to vote and also try and get tickets to the game, which would make a nice break in a Hawaiian vacation.

Currently Aaron Rodgers if the top vote getter and I saw somewhere that Tim Tebow was 4th among AFC starting quarterbacks. I hope he gets voted in just for all of the gnashing of teeth from sportswriters across the nation!

Facebook, Twitter in Death Match Over Sports Fans’ Souls

If Facebook bought Twitter, sports fans would rejoice.

Through such a fantasy merger, there’d be only one “identification service” to worry about when you wanted to broadcast your sports opinions to the world. That would be a welcome relief from the two-headed monster that now rules the kingdom of sports smack, the beast with tweets on one side and Facebook posts on the other. The big question is whether sports fans will continue to feed both monsters, or whether one will prevail, like Highlander, to rule them all.

Winning the ID Game

Before we get too deep into bad movie cliches, it’s worthwhile to take a small step back and wonder at how quickly Facebook and Twitter have basically won the battle for user identification, or authentication. In the days of Grampa Internet, individual sites would try to get readers to “log in” or “register” with unique passwords and IDs. That led to a frustrating era, just now ending, of having to remember multiple screen names, logins and places to track conversations.

Then came Facebook and Twitter, who after a short while made the smart move of making users’ identifying features portable — meaning you could use your Facebook or Twitter screen persona to log in to web sites and blogs, instead of having to remember each site’s unique ID. Boom, game over. If you are an active sports commenter, you are probably already on Facebook and Twitter and spend little time anywhere else.

Though ESPN still requires you to have a site-specific login to comment on their story “conversation” sites, it’s easy to see where the worldwide leader is going, with constant beckonings to “tweet us your questions” to be answered on talk shows, and with an unending parade of Facebook polls and comment come-ons. It’s pretty amazing that two startups like Facebook and Twitter could completely trash the user-ID-accumulation schemes cooked up by major media properties since the web began. What might be more compelling is the coming clash between the two new titans, who each have attributes that make them more compelling to sports opinionators, depending upon the situation.

Twitter: Fast, fun and the athlete’s domain

Though by far the smaller of the two services, Twitter is the new darling of the sports world, in no small part because it has become the favorite platform for pro athletes. Unlike a website, a blog or even a Facebook page, a Twitter account needs only some short thoughts and a smartphone — two things that are front and center in the pro athlete’s world of 2011.

In its short life Twitter has changed the face of many facets of media production, including coverage of wars and revolutions. In the less-meaningful but not less-followed world of sports, Twitter has become the de facto news wire of the sporting world, with teams, athletes, fans and followers all adding to and taking away from the information stream.

For the average fan, Twitter is like a fire hose of comments and information that never slows down, and is as wide and diverse as who you choose to follow. From a commenter standpoint there is the problem of having to make your voice heard in the crowd, but by just signing up and tweeting you still have a chance to see your name or fan-tastic psuedonym flashed on the ESPN screen. The low barrier to entry and instant gratification make Twitter the first choice for a lot of new Internet sports enthusiasts.

Facebook: Best for long opinions, monetization

In terms of really building an online social presence, however, nothing beats Facebook, especially when it comes to easily finding a home for photos, videos, long opinions and opportunities to build a business. For teams, athletes, vendors and sponsors in the field, a Facebook page is a no-brainer as it gives easy access to the hundreds of millions of folks who already have a Facebook ID.

For the average sports fan Facebook is probably a lot easier to understand than Twitter, and the post/comments structure lends itself to longer “conversations” on a single topic or event. The recent integration of Facebook comments under blog posts is a step toward Facebook’s plan of social-activity domination: Simply put, the service wants to make it easy for you to record your every thought, “Like” and observation in some form that can be embedded inside a Facebook wrapper.

And by allowing integration of applications and even stores on Facebook pages, the service is equally attractive to teams, vendors and sponsors who want to extract dollars from the multitudes of fans. The commerce-friendly platform is what gives Facebook the sporting edge right now, but Twitter is gaining ground quickly, thanks to its Google-like ease of use.

Who Wins? Or do they both survive?

Right now, connected sports fans as well as athletes, teams, schools, advertisers and vendors in the sports-fan space all are most likely active on both services, depending on the time of day or situation. While much of the live commenting action has moved to Twitter thanks to its instant-publishing stream of thought, the more leisurely searches for information and interaction still take place on websites, blogs or Facebook pages, meaning that you can’t live on simply one or the other right now.

While that means there is still the headache of “do I post to Twitter or Facebook,” there remains the possibility of some future integration, perhaps by a business arrangement once both firms go public as is widely expected. Though there do exist services and techno-solutions that will replicate your Facebook posts onto Twitter and vice versa, the different styles of communication on either platform make such services an inelegant compromise at best. Will those differing styles keep the beast’s two heads alive indefinitely, or will one succeed in chewing through the other’s throat? Whichever way it goes, it will be a fun movie to watch play out over the near term future.

NFL Scores 500,000 Online Viewers for Thursday Night Highlights

We didn’t have a chance to check it out, but according to the NFL a half-million folks logged on to NFL.com/LIVE last night to check out a varied package of “in-game” highlights and analysis from the Thursday night tilt between the New York Rexes and the Denver Tebows.

According to the press release about the game viewership, the online portion was not a full streaming presentation but instead a mix of “live look-ins” and analysis from the NFL Network’s various talking heads. From the release:

Nearly 500,000 fans logged on to the complementary online coverage of Jets-Broncos via NFL.com/LIVE Thursday Night Football presented by GMC, which features “live look-ins,” highlights, statistics and instant analysis from a team of experts on-site and in NFL Network’s Los Angeles studios.

And once again, having an online component did nothing to detract from regular over the air or cable viewers — so please, more online coverage! Again, from the release, the stuff you already know — that everyone likes football, especially on Thursday when there’s no NBA.

Last night’s New York Jets-Denver Broncos game on NFL Network was watched by an average of 7.1 million viewers (not including over-the-air stations in New York and Denver) – topping last year’s Week 11 game by 31 percent (Bears-Dolphins, 5.4 million). After two games, Thursday Night Football is averaging 6.1 million viewers, up 17 percent over 2010.

Jets-Broncos is the fifth most-watched game in the six years of Thursday Night Football on NFL Network and ranked as the night’s No. 1 show among all programs on cable. Other sports competition included North Carolina-Virginia Tech college football on ESPN, which drew 1.8 million viewers.

Friday Grab Bag — Jocks Twittering Guide Issue

No M&M’s in NASCAR
Kyle Busch will be forced to race in the last two Sprint Cup races without his primary sponsor as M&M’s pulls out. This is more of the aftermath of his cheap shot of intentionally wrecking Ron Hornaday Jr. in the Truck Series two weeks ago. Busch was suspended from racing in the Sprint Cup last week and fined $50,000 by NASCAR. I had always thought that NASCAR encouraged this type of driving, who knew?


Twitter offers advice to Athletes on how to use Twitter

Twitter, which clearly understands how interesting athletes can be on Twitter, has issued an advisory for them on its developer site. The social media company tells them to talk about what they are passionate about, use hash tags, reply back to followers and mention your team mates among other tidbits of sage advice. Also it tells them that if something controversial happens on the field Twitter can help clear the air- no mention that it can also shorten a career, or is that just my take?

Apple releases iOS 5.01 battery fix
Apple has responded to complaints that the latest release of its iOS operating system, iOS 5.0, unnaturally drains batteries of iPhones. The company has released iOS 5.0.1 that has been designed to fix that issue as well as including several other bug fixes for both the phone and the iPad including document syncing via iCloud and improved voice recognition for Australian users.

Will ESPN’s Longhorn Network force a College Playoff?
An Interesting piece from Businessweek discusses how the $300 million, 20 year deal between the University of Texas and the Walt Disney Co. (parent to ESPN for those that are still unaware) was a major tipping point in collegiate athletics. The move led to the huge rash of conference realignments and movements as everybody tries to position themselves to get as much of the money that is on the table for themselves and tradition be damned. I think this line from the article says it all- “It’s greed,” said William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University of Maryland system and co-chairman of the nonprofit Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. “There is so much money on the table that everyone is in a state of panic.”


This week in Lawsuit News

The patent wars continue unabated, which always makes for interesting watching as long as you are not personally at risk. First up is Microsoft which apparently has another target in its royalties pursuit, this time it has its eye on Huawei for Android patent license. Then there is the report that Google will be offering support to Android firms involved in lawsuits. Last but not least is the news that Apple continues Steve Jobs legal pursuit of Android developers for what it perceives as patent violations of its technology. Is this a great time to be a patent lawyer or what?

Major League Baseball to be Lockout Free?
The site MLBtraderumors.com covers a range of reports that indicate that MLB and the Players Union may be well on the road to reaching a new accord without the need for canceling the World Series or some other slap in the fans face. While the NBA is in lockout mode and the NFL just recovering from its labor war it is great news that at least one major league can work like adults well in advance of the expiration of the existing deal to forge a new one. I hope this does work out well.

Adobe throws in the towel on Mobile Flash
Adobe is facing the music and has announced that it will stop developing a version of its Flash technology for mobile devices. The technology has come under fire as Apple had banned its use in its iOS due to what it claimed was it did not meet the needs of a that space, a move that was later followed by Microsoft. At first Adobe fought back but now the company said it will turn its attention to HTML5 and will work with all of the major developers, Apple included, in that space.

Nothing to do with sports, social media or technology but- Did you catch the photo in The Consumerist of a pig-shaped pork roast offered at Costco? Looks like it is ground and then molded pork scraps that are shaped like a baby piglet-somehow I am sure this will not make my dinner table anytime soon but who knows, it could make for a very interesting holiday gift!

ESPN VP on Live Penn State Coverage: ‘We Missed the Story’

Along with other media types, Mobile Sports Report thought that ESPN’s live coverage of the turmoil surrounding the firing of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno Wednesday night was below par for the worldwide leader in sports. Thursday ESPN executive vice president Norby Williamson agreed in part, saying that he’d like “a do-over” and that ESPN “missed the story” by not having the right kind of live coverage on the spot.

In a podcast released Thursday on ESPN’s website Williamson, the network’s executive vice president for production, discussed ESPN’s coverage of events Wednesday night. While he offered praise for ESPN’s “perspective” and its large roster of learned commentators, Williamson at several points admits that ESPN fumbled its coverage, especially by failing to provide live coverage when the activities were at fever pitch.

“We were a little remiss of our live coverage, on the ground,” Williamson says on the podcast, right around the 4:00 mark of the taping. Though ESPN had camera crews on site, including front-line talent Tom Rinaldi, Williamson said that ESPN got caught out of position and in the turmoil with students sometimes turning hostile toward news crews, were unable to move into the proper position for a live shot.

“We were a little late with that,” Williamson says, referring to the live coverage of the hottest parts of the so-called riot. “That [the live coverage] is the one thing I’d like a do-over on.”

Due to the swarming crowds — and the potential for actual harm to ESPN’s crew — the network was unable to get its cameras to where the action was, Williamson said. “Where you were is where you were,” says Williamson. “We could’ve done a better job of positioning.”

After praising competitor CNN for being better positioned, Williamson goes on to compliment the ESPN reporters on the scene for getting good interviews in the crowd, even though live on air via phone, reporter Tom Ferrey told anchors Stuart Scott and Steve Levy that he left the action after getting hit in the leg by a rock. Williamson closes his review (around the 7:30 mark) by saying simply — like we saw — that ESPN dropped the ball.

“I think we missed the story for a window there, of being live on the ground when the student insurrection happened,” Williamson says.
