Watching Golf this Week: The Memorial, or ‘We’re All Back at Jack’s House’

Just when Zach Johnson threatened to kill off his own victory with a last-hole brain fart — and drag the golf season into perhaps fatal tedium with people talking nonstop about rules — golf fans are saved by the arrival of the Memorial this week, a sort of mini-major that will have all the big names back in play, including Tiger, Rory, and even Bubba the baby dad! Plus Dustin Johnson back from fighting off back injuries and drug rumors, and the rest… Rickie… Dufner… it’s the 6th major, the Memorial!

The course, of course, is Jack’s own spread, otherwise known as Muirfield Village in Dublin, O-HI-O. We’ve never been there but if the best golfer ever built a tournament-tailored spread from the dirt up you know it’s gonna be good. And it is. And so will be the golf, some of which you will be able to watch online, since the Tour’s Live@ online video is back this week. Plus there is bonus weekend early coverage on the Golf Channel, so if you’ve been longing to watch something other than Jason Dufner and his dip, this is the weekend to get back on the couch or in front of your mobile device of choice. Watching Golf this Week: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial

It’s Hogan’s Alley weekend for the PGA Tour, with a better-than-average stop known for many years as simply “the Colonial.” Played in Fort Worth, Texas, hometown of golfing legend and five-time tourney champ Ben Hogan, the Colonial this year has a pretty good field including red-hot Jason Dufner and player of the year candidate Hunter Mahan, among others.

No Tiger, Phil or Rory, though, so press drama will be at a minimum for at least one more week, until the stars reassemble at the Memorial in Ohio. Until then, let the less-known stars shine in Texas.

Watching Golf this Week: HP Byron Nelson Championship

After burning out a bit watching the Players Championship last week, I might be like Tiger and take a week off. After all, without ol’ Lord Byron around to pass judgement from his lawn chair this tournament just doesn’t feel like it has the same meaning. Plus, I am not sure I want to wallow in the Keeeeeegan Bradley “first win” BS that is sure to emerge. I am not a Bradley fan, mostly due to the long putter. I may not ever like the guy because I was pulling for Dufner in the PGA finale last year. Is that a rivalry worth worrying about? Maybe not. But even if I don’t watch, there will be golf this weekend.

And with Phil and Ernie Els in the field there is some star power, though anything other than the U.S. Open right now feels like practice. Well maybe the Memorial will be worthwhile. Certainly the PGA Tour seems to think so, because that is when we will next see live online coverage of golf — none this week from Texas. And we’re back to shortened times for Golf Channel and CBS so — maybe this week is for hard-cores only.

Watching Golf This Week: Tiger, Phil and Rory: Live, Not on Home Video

Part of watching golf this week involved a much talked-about home video — which, if you were a fan of Tiger Woods, you might have found interesting. The established golf media, however, and even some of Woods’ tour competitors, took friendly swings at the King for his somewhat self-absorbed, completely scandal-free Q&A session.

With all that behind us now all that remains is the golf, this week at Quail Hollow in Charlotte for the Wells Fargo Championship. All the big hitters are back this week, at one of the tour stops that is a favorite among the golfers for its layout and “major” type feel (and “major” purse — $6,500,000 in the prize kitty). So set back, tune in the Golf Channel for an extra hour Thursday and Friday, and bonus coverage before CBS comes in on the weekend.

Watching Golf This Week: Bubba’s Back in NOLA

Has the feel-good aura of winning the green jacket already worn off? Or was Bubba Watson always something of a crank, and now we’re just noticing because everyone is paying attention? The simmering story this week on the PGA Tour is that Bubba Watson is back playing in a somewhat minor event, which is surprising because tour stops like the Zurich Classic of New Orleans are the types the big dogs usually skip. And now Bubba is a big dog, courtesy of his Masters win. But Bubba is a man who is loyal, and he won here last year so he considers it his obligation to show up.

The only problem is, he’s letting everyone know that. And if you read between the lines from his testy press conference earlier in the week you get the feeling that the feel-good everyman Bubba may not stay that way for long. Cue the prima donna music! Let’s see how cheery the new dad is if he starts hitting them into the swamp. And if Bubba fails us, maybe John Daly can provide some excitement. Anyway — no online golf AGAIN this week, so you are stuck with broadcast TV, radio or shot tracker. (At least there’s the bonus Golf Channel coverage on the weekend) But you probably won’t care until Saturday anyway since you will be watching the NFL Draft.

Want to Spout off About the Draft? CBSSports Wants to Hear From You!

Have you ever watched some talking head spout some nonsense on television, say about the qualities or lack thereof in a football player being drafted? Well CBS Sports is grabbing hold of social media and will allow you to have your say- within reason of course.

CBS Sports has set up an interactive 2012 Draft Day program, rather than fill the airwaves with two days of people explaining why Team A was wrong in selecting Player B because on this expert’s mock draft the player is not even a 3rd rounder, and so on and so forth.

While it does have the usual suspects, NFL insiders, draft experts and college football mavens, it has a number of systems in place to allow you to comment about the events as they unfold. The show will include two sets, one that is dedicated to following social media such as Twitter feeds and Facebook, and highlighting the current hot conversations. The set will also have live interaction with fans and have snap polls to get instant feedback on events.

Manning the social desk will be moderator Lindsay McCormick along with CBSSports.com’s Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco along with Senior NFL Blogger Will Brinson.

On the second set will be what viewers have become accustomed to over the years, where we see the draft as it unfolds, hear commentary and analysis from the experts on the picks and listen to prediction on who each team will draft to fill important voids in their lineups.

The more mainstream set will feature Jason Horowitz as master of ceremonies along with CBSSports.com College Football Insider Bruce Feldman and NFL Draft expert Rob Rang, and former St. Louis Rams General Manager Billy Devaney. If you are away from your television during the draft CBS Sports Mobile iPhone users can watch live streaming coverage of CBSSports.com Draft.

This is a great way to use social media to your advantage. The huge growth in the draft just highlights how interested fans are in their teams and the moves that they make. My allowing them to have a say simply makes them even more involved.
